The Red Barn Community Music Series presents guitarist Craig Ventresco with Meredith Axelrod in a concert featuring 1890-1930’s ragtime, jazz and blues. Craig Ventresco and Meredith Axelrod have been performing together for over ten years. Drawing from their vast collection of 78’s and cylinder records they have amassed a repertoire of hundreds of great and oftentimes obscure songs composed between the 1890s and the 1940s.The concert is on Saturday, March 2, at the Beach Hut Deli, 1240 Los Osos Valley Rd., Los Osos. Doors open at 5:00pm and the performance is at 6:00pm.
Craig Ventresco is a guitar virtuoso whose style is a unique combination of ragtime, rural blues, early jazz guitar and traditional string band influences. He concentrates on early twentieth century vaudeville, ragtime and popular songs as recorded on obscure 78s and cylinders from the dawn of recorded music.
In a review of his CD, The Past Is Yet to Come, Ventresco was described as “…one of the best ragtime pickers alive today… with The Past Is Yet to Come, we get an entire disc of his dizzying guitar solos. The results are stunning. Ventresco’s ability to perform rags by Big Bill Broonzy, Eubie Blake, and Scott Joplin is awe-inspiring; his dense arrangements sound impossibly difficult to play, but they are a sheer pleasure to hear. Craig tends to play these old blues, jazz, and Tin Pan Alley tunes fast… but his energized playing breaths new life into the works. Ventresco’s a real talent and ragtime lovers couldn’t ask for a finer disc of guitar music. It may be sacrilegious to admit, but Ventresco’s technical ability is right up there with Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Blake–the only things missing are the pops and hisses of the 78s. An incredible disc.” Jason Verlinde (amazon.com)
“Craig Ventresco is the most ‘authentic’ neo-ragtime/acoustic blues wrangler in the country.” (New York Press, Vol. 13 No. 47)
Delightfully engaging and unassumingly comic, Meredith Axelrod envisions the limitless potential of early twentieth century music, whether it be Ragtime, Music Hall, Pop Standard, Boogie Woogie, Tin Pan Alley, String band, Jazz, Country, Blues or even Jug Band music, and embodies the spirit that brought the music into existence in the first place. Her vocal style is unusual, probably because she learned to sing by listening to how folks did it a century ago — through the medium of cylinders and 78-rpm records. In addition to her work with Craig Ventresco, Meredith plays solo shows, and appears in myriad of other cooperatives, with her own hot jazz band, and her own string band.
