The Red Barn Community Music Series presents multi-instrumentalist Meredith Axelrod and the legendary Jim Kweskin in concert. The performance will draw from Kweskin’s and Axelrod’s extensive backgrounds in early jazz, blues, jug band and other Americana traditions. Their CD, “Come on In”, was recorded live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. The show is on Saturday, July 7th, in the Red Barn at the Los Osos Community Park. Doors open at 4:30pm, potluck and potluck jam band at 5:00pm, and the performance is at 6:00pm.
Delightfully engaging and unassumingly comic, Meredith Axelrod envisions the limitless potential of early twentieth century music, whether it be Ragtime, Music Hall, Pop Standard, Boogie Woogie, Tin Pan Alley, String band, Jazz, Country, Blues or even Jug Band music, and embodies the spirit that brought the music into existence in the first place. Her vocal style is unusual, probably because she learned to sing by listening to how folks did it a century ago – through the medium of cylinders and 78-rpm records. In addition to playing solo shows, Meredith appears in myriad cooperatives: with her own hot jazz band, her own string band, in partnership with string band, solo act dynamo Frank Fairfield, and often with the jug band legend, Jim Kweskin.
Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader. He also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. He has maintained a remarkably consistent musical vision since his jug band days, continuing to explore traditional folk and blues with the sophisticated sensibility of a jazz musician and jazz with the communal simplicity of a folk artist. He has recorded solo ventures, as a member of the U and I band, and with U and I bandmate Samoa Wilson, and continues to perform widely in various formats. In recent years he and Geoff Muldaur have often appeared as a duo, revisiting and expanding on their Jug Band repertoire, and he and Meredith perform old Pop Tunes as well as Blues and Jazz Standards.
